1. Master the Art of June Watering

When it’s dry out, it is incredibly tempting to run the sprinklers for 10 minutes every single evening. However, daily shallow watering actually harms your grass by encouraging a weak, shallow root system that burns up the moment a heatwave hits.

Instead, the golden rule is to water deeply and infrequently. 

The Goal: Your lawn needs about 1 inch of water per week (including rainfall). 

The Routine: Water just 2 to 3 mornings a week, applying about a third of an inch each time. 

The Timing: Always water early in the morning (between 5:00 AM and 8:00 AM). This gives the soil time to absorb the moisture before the sun evaporates it, and prevents water from sitting on the grass blades overnight, which triggers fungal diseases like brown patch. 

2. Raise Your Mowing Height

Proper lawn mowing changes drastically with the seasons. In the spring, grass grows fast and can be cut a bit shorter. In June, it's time to raise those mower blades.

For our common local turf types, like Tall Fescue, you should maintain a cutting height of 3.5 to 4 inches. Leaving the grass blades longer provides crucial shade for the soil. This shade keeps soil temperatures cooler, reduces water evaporation, and naturally blocks sunlight from reaching hidden weed seeds like crabgrass.

Pro Tip: Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade during a single cutting. Taking off too much at once shocks the plant and leaves your lawn looking brown and stalky.

3. Refresh Your Beds with Mulch Installation
